The art room

I love my art rooms! I love the magic that occurs every day in these creative spaces, and I do my best to make them beautiful, functional, and inspiring!

Of course, for art to happen, it takes both enthusiam and discipline. I try to encourage these qualities in the art room by giving students some very simple guidelines to follow. Here they are:

1. Use your gifts! Your time in the art room is for MAKING ART.

2. Treat your neighbor as yourself! This includes giving everyone the       space and quiet they need to create, as well as sharing materials and     keeping your hands to yourself.

3. Listen! Follow instructions and ask questions after instructions have      been given.

4. The Art Room is a NO WASTE zone! Use only the materials that you need,   and put materials back in the appropriate place when finished. THINK       before you make, THINK before you take!

At the Elementary level, students who have finished their work and cleaned up their work area may partake of the FREE DRAW STATION, which is stocked with various and sundry art materials that they may use to make whatever they would like.. within reason! (Elementary students know that they should not make: paper airplanes, anything resembling a weapon of any kind, anything portraying violence, blood, guts, or death, or any inappropriate images.)

At the Middle School level, the classroom contains a MAKERSPACE, which is stocked with a lot of recyclables, hot glue guns, and other tools and materials for making art. (The creative limits mentioned in the previous paragraph apply here, too!)

These spaces are intended to serve as a reward for work well done, as well as places for exploration, experimentation, making mistakes and turning them into something great, and independent learning!
